Although there was a simple solution, which was to purchase a smaller grill, at the time I had opted against it because I was only staying in the apartment until the construction on my home had been complete. So I decided not to purchase a small grill and instead just wait it out.

Best Portable Grill Choices For Apartments, Condos and Townhouses: Which Grill Should I Choose…Charcoal, Electric or a Propane Gas Grill?

Using a Charcoal Grill

Some complexes have restrictions on which type of grill can be used due to the closeness of units , in order to lower the risk of fire hazard. As a apartment dweller you should also use your better judgement when purchasing a grill. For instance, you may not want to purchase a charcoal grill if you reside on the ground floor of an apartment and have someone living above you,  knowing that the smoke will travel up. Since charcoal grills produce a lot of smoke, using one may only disturb your neighbors, who will probably report you to management.  If this happens, you will probably be asked by management not to use that particular style of grill anymore. On the other hand, if you reside on the third floor of an apartment complex with no neighbors above you, using a charcoal grill would likely not cause problems. If you decide to go with a charcoal grill, you will need to have space for storing charcoal and lighter fluid. Keep in mind that lighter fluid is highly flammable and should be stored  in a cool place, away from other flammable objects.

Using a Gas or Propane Gas Grill

If you are considering purchasing a small gas grill, you will need to make sure that it is able to tie into your homes natural gas line. Apartments usually do not use natural gas so if you decided to go with a gas grill it would need to be a propane gas grill or you would have no way of operating your grill. If you choose to go with a propane gas grill, you will need to make sure you have a way to store  any left over propane. Again, you will need to verify with your complex manager to make sure that the use of a propane gas grill is allowed where you dwell. Propane gas grills will require the use of liquid propane. While the LP (liquid propane) cylinder is connected, the grill must remain outside in a well ventilated area. If you plan to store a propane gas grill indoors, you will need to disconnect the LP cylinder and store it outdoors, in an upright position, once your grill has completely cooled.

Using An Electric Grill

If you decide to go with an electric grill, there will be no need to purchase charcoal or propane. You will need to make sure that cords or not immerse or exposed in water or any other liquid. The space where your cord will be located will need to be secured to avoid safety issues. Also, the electric grill will need to be connected to a ground fault interrupter outlet in accordance with code. Electric grills should not and cannot be used in the rain or near flammable materials.

Other Things To Consider When Purchasing A Small Grill

Other things to be considered before purchasing a grill would be features that make the grill more convenient such as push button ignition, tuck-away tables, ease of use,  grid size, and heating temperatures. These are the same features that should be considered when purchasing any size grill.  Grilling foods can be a fun and convenient method of cooking meals and also add variety to the menu, but safety should always be considered first. Just because you live in an apartment complex doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice grilling your food. If you are like me don’t see the need for purchasing a small grill because you already own a large grill, remember, having a portable grill creates options and will allow you to take your grilling on the road. To reduce the risk of injures and accidents, always follow the manufacturers instructions for assembly and safety. Be smart when deciding on a grill choice and always consult with your property manager before making your grill purchase. The best portable grill choices for small living spaces should be one that has the features you desire, performs well and can easily be moved, and one that keeps you in compliance.
